Interest Groups That Might Pique Your Interest
Today, we're going to talk about interest groups.
Interest groups are a group of people who share something in common and work together to shape public policy. These groups pressure lawmakers to pass legislation in favor of their own interests through donating money or even writing legislature for a Congressmen/Congresswomen. Interest groups also mobilize voters to go to polling places and vote for the interests which align with the group's interests.
Some might political groups might be corrupt, but there are many groups who support good causes such as the ACLU. And that's the interest group we will analyze!
The American Civil Liberties Union is an interest group who wants to defend the rights and liberties guaranteed to us by the United States Constitution.
I took a screenshot of one of their blog posts to analyze their point of view and purpose.
Immediately, we can tell the ACLU has a socially liberal perspective on immigration and the Trump Administration because of the scathing tone towards Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his efforts to dismantle protections for marginalized people. Socially liberal people typically are against erasing protections for transgender people. This establishes Sessions' policies as socially conservative and since the ACLU is against socially conservative policies, we can assume they are socially liberal.
The purpose of this excerpt is to paint Jeff Sessions as one of, if not, the worst Attorney General in US history for blatantly disregarding the rights and liberties of all Americans. The line, "We've rounded up some of the former attorney general's most egregious actions below to showcase Sessions' contempt for civil rights and liberties" supports this notion.
The author uses pathos/appeal to emotions by using the words "draconian", "egregious", and "infamous" to describe Sessions and his policies. The use of this loaded and emotional language invokes disgust and disdain for the former Attorney General because of the wholly negative words they use to describe him; the way they describe him is of an irredeemable nature.
One possible cultural influence might be the election of Trump and the appointment of his administration. Many people believed the rights of marginalized people, such as those of the LGBT+ community or illegal immigrants, would be stripped away. Hence why so many people joined the ACLU after the 2016 election and why the author of this article is so wholeheartedly against Sessions' actions.
